Because of the successes achieved by Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, several businessmen from New Orleans would come together and attempt to organize a bowl game for college. On New Year’s Day in 1935, it would witness the first Sugar Bowl game played at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. In front of 22,000 fans, Tulane team would beat Temple 20-14.
For the next 40 year, Tulane Stadium would host the successive games of Sugar Bowl. That happened until 1975 when the Mercedes-Benz Superdome stadium was launched. And that is where sugar Bowl games have been held to date.Several great players are in the game’s MVP list including Herschel Walker,Dan Marino and Bo Jackson. The Sugar Bowl 2018 will be the 84th game of the Sugar Bowl. That is indeed a brief but a rich history of the game.
Sugar Bowl 2018 date, time, and location
The Sugar Bowl 2018 semifinal will be played by Alabama and Clemson and happens on January 1.This will definitely be one of the 2017-2018 games that will result in the conclusion of the 2017 FBS football season. The game between the two top sides is officially recognized as the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The match between Clemson and Alabama will be special in a way because it would be the 3rd season in a row the 2 teams will be competing against each other. Indeed it is predicted that it would be a spirited re-match that would great present a great spectacle for the fans.
Of course the only difference between the meetings between the two teams this time round is that the last two matches came at the national title game while this one will be in the semi-final. In the last two season meetings, Alabama won in the first meeting while in the next meeting Clemson managed to get its revenge. This indeed presents a new kind of college football rivalry.
The match between the tigers and the Crimson Tide will kick off at 7 p.m. CT. The match would constitute the second semi-final match to be played after the match involving Oklahoma and Georgia played at 4 p.m. CT. The winner of the 2 Sugar Bowl matches will book their place to compete at the final to be played on January 8, 2018 at the same stadium.
A Look at the Teams Playing in the Semi-Final
The game played by Clemson against Miami served to show the superiority of the Tigers from the start to the end. Had the Tigers lost the game, definitely any hope of being national champions would have been extinguished. Not only that, the match for Miami served as a painful reminder that they have a long way to go and that any talk about Miami back being premature. The Tigers managed to carry a score of 38-0 into the fourth-quarter and eventually
surrendered a field-goal which was meaningless.
The Tigers have been rock solid all season and therefore they will be overflowing with confidence heading into the semifinal. The only blemish on their excellent record was their defeat to Syracuse which happened in October. Of course in that match it will be remembered that quarterback Kelly Bryant because of concussion left the game in the first half.
For Alabama, as you may have properly heard, they have been incessant talks about whether they even deserve to be in the semifinal. That is for the reason that its qualification was not that straightforward as they would have wanted, after they lost to Auburn 14-26. Ohio team would do them a big help when it beat Wisconsin, was supposed to take the 4th spot if it managed to be victorious.
Ultimately, Alabama had to depend on the decision from the committee to reach the semi-finals. There are not too many quality wins on the resume of Alabama which would not further its course greatly. But my humble and honest take is that discussions regarding the suitability of Alabama to be selected for the semifinal should be rested here. If a decision was already made by the necessary committee, there is no way of turning back.
Oklahoma suffered its own disappointments along the way. There were times it just never went as they may have planned and doubt crept in. In Week 2 when the Sooners managed to stun Ohio State, at least they helped in dispelling some of the doubts that had already been cast in preseason regarding their ability. But in the shootout loss to Iowa State that happened in October, it is like they brought the doubting to themselves again and proved doubters right. Ultimately when other teams in other conferences were badly struggling, they kept improving and cruising in November. They proved to be brave amidst doubters.
For Georgia, the hiring of Kirby Smart has proved a masterstroke as through his leadership skills he has been able to get the best out of his players. That is from Nick Chubb and Sony Michel who are senior running backs and the team’s experienced front seven. There were important wins over Notre Dame, and the team’s SEC East competition. In the initial playoff rankings, Georgia topped but was eventually humbled by Auburn. Of course Georgia did get an acceptable level of revenge against Auburn winning 28-7 in the SEC title game.
In terms of predictions, Clemson is seen to be in a great position to come out on top in their 3rd recent meeting against Alabama. For the match involving the Sooners versus Georgia there is not too much separating the two teams and depending on how they both approach the game, any team can win the match. I would think Sooners will carry the day.
